The importance of sleep
We have all heard or even used the phrase "I need my beauty rest." Some may say "Beauty Sleep." I have tried to find the origin of the saying with no luck. When we speak of things essential, rest is definitely one of them. Many people say I don't need much sleep. That is not actually true. Many people have become accustomed to functioning in a state of sleep deprecation. Many have begun a repetitive cycle of coffee/caffeine overdose to meet the demands of daily life. Once there, coffee/caffeine is the must have or people just aren't able to function. The fact is they are sleep deprived and exhausted. Let's take a moment to look at it. If a person drinks three or more cups of coffee a day, doesn't stand to reason they wouldn't be able to sleep at night. A glass of wine, beer or some sort of alcoholic beverage "helps you unwind." That's because the body then needs a depressant (alcohol) to counter the daily doses of the stimulant (caffeine). I am not judging in way. I am just making the observation. I have used coffee to get me through days when I clearly did get enough rest. I have done it and I get it.
How many times have you or someone you discussed how you were able to get a good night's sleep and how great it was? It is a point worth noting and almost celebrating because it can be a challenge if we are honest. The fact is we need rest. "A good night's sleep affects our mood as well as our health.
Lack of sleep affects: heart, brain, liver, skeleton, immune system, sexual function/fertility, can effect weight balance and also the face and skin in terms of looking tired worn and unhealthy. The National Sleep Foundation (TNSF) refers to quality sleep habits as having "good sleep hygiene." The graphic to the right shows the recommended hours of sleep by age group and provides interesting statics on sleep hygiene.
NSF recommends the following to help get a good night's sleep and habits for good sleep hygiene:
Have comfortable pillows and make the
room attractive and inviting for sleep but
also free of allergens that might affect you
and objects that might cause you to slip or
fall if you have to get up.
